Fiji's deputy Prime Minister and former senator Helen Clark says the nation's preselection process was flawed yesterday and that it did not allow any of the major candidates with a positive message to be selected. She says the results showed that the vote was weighted towards the traditional elite who were given seats at the expense of Indigenous candidates and people from communities with less access to education and the wider community. "You won't find a single Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander politician in this country with any real policy platform, let alone any policy to make Australia great again," she said. The former prime minister said the party wanted more diversity in the Senate but had not changed its stance since she returned from Australia. Ms Clark was elected to the Senate in 1997 as an Independent and remained the party's leader until 2005. She won an election to the House of Representatives in 2010, but failed to enter a coalition. The prime minister said yesterday she wanted to see the Senate's voting patterns changed to give more political representation to Indigenous Australians who represent the largest percentage of electoral representation.

"The preselection system is a system that is in very bad shape... It's basically an electoral machine for the big oligarchy. There is no sense of equality or transparency whatsoever." "I've never seen a party have such great success in such a bad system in so long a time and so many people have been so disenfranchised by it," she said. The prime minister also challenged the Opposition Leader's criticism of the system, telling a crowd of journalists in Canberra there were still "huge barriers" to changing how the votes were reported, including reports that some senators received more money from mining companies than their party counterparts. Labor Senator Eric Abetz called on Ms Clark to resign and called for her to be given more powers to tackle electoral bias. "She is the best Australian and should have the power to take responsibility for how this system works and she should not be getting away with it - no more and no less," he said.

Francois fillon wins french conservative presidential primary

July 1, 2017 – François Fillon won the French conservative presidential primary Saturday to become the first new French president since 1992 to win his party's nomination.

"We are delighted to announce our new president, François Fillon, as the candidate who has given us the most positive change since the end of the Cold War," said French conservative candidate Francois Fillon, a former leader of the country's centre-right PS

The winner of the presidential primary, the far-right former minister who's now known for his populist views and ties to rightwing populist movement Marine Le Pen, said Saturday he believes the country should not wait until 2017 to tackle rising inequality, the influx of migrants, the lack of skilled jobs and a climate of fear which he thinks the United States helped create.

"The political parties are only serving themselves, they are doing everything they can to get themselves elected," Fillon told reporters outside the Stadelph hotel in Paris where he spent the night.

"This is why they have decided that they will not hold elections until the time is right."

Fillon, a 62-year-old businessman with British heritage, has always held the same political positions, which he has described as being rooted in the traditional values of the country's French-speaking minority.

The result of the election shows that Fillon has the backing of a generation of voters who voted for the centre-right candidate over the centre-left but now reject that, saying he cannot afford to repeat those mistakes.

He also drew criticism from his fellow party officials and rivals as he campaigned for the nomination in a city of about 1 million people just north of Paris.

"It's clear that we have to change this government, if we do that, then the French republic will be in danger, and its future won't be in Paris either," Fillon said.

As the French election went out, his campaign was followed on Twitter by Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Front party.

Fillon's allies in the Republican Party and its allies in the centre-right are also supporting him.

The U.S. president and his family are also not invited to the festivities but some in the Republican Party are scheduled to be there, including GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
